Furhoof: Sixth Man
Years Active: 2014-2021
Number of Releases: 38
Founded by: Ryan McCardle & TJ Hatcher
Furhoof: Sixth Man was a division of Furious Hooves that ran from 2014 to 2021 that allowed them to focus on a more “manufactured” run of a larger quantity. In 2022 after becoming the “go-to” edition for many years, the Sixth Man division dissolved back into Furious Hooves. It was no longer reserved just for touring bands or when a “Jordan-run” (their nickname for a run of 23) just wasn’t going to cut it for artists consistently playing shows. The name itself came about in 2014 when co-founders TJ Hatcher and Ryan McCardle were having trouble coming up with a concept, until they remembered to think in basketball terms…
The National Basketball Association's Sixth Man of the Year Award is an annual award given since the 1982-83 NBA season to the league's most valuable player coming off the bench as a substitute (or sixth man) for their team. Some notable Sixth Man players include: Toni Kukoč ('96 Bulls), Dell Curry ('94 Hornets), or back-to-back winner Detlef Schrempf ('91 & ‘92 Pacers). In more recent years, the award has been presented to 3-time Sixth Man standouts Jamal Crawford (‘10 Hawks, ‘14 & ‘16 Clippers) and Lou Williams (‘15 Raptors, ‘18 & ‘19 Clippers).
The Furhoof: Sixth Man pressings would still take on the same amount of care and attention to detail that the handmade editions had. Just like the handmade editions, the Furhoof: Sixth Man pressing would also get the hand-numbered treatment. Some of the earlier Furhoof: Sixth Man releases were dubbed in-house on a special high-speed tape duplicator, but later on were professionally duplicated instead. All media was still hand-assembled by Furious Hooves with some extra goodies. The initial idea was that every release would have a small-run of handmade “starters" and once those got “exhausted” (sold out), then in came the Sixth Man.
